What is sex therapy?

SEXUAL WELL-BEING MATTERS.

Many people find it difficult to discuss sex and sexuality. Sex therapy is a type of “talk therapy” that addresses sexual problems affecting both individuals and couples. Sex therapy is intended to provide a safe, comfortable, non-judgmental space where you feel at ease discussing and exploring your sexual issues. Sex Therapy can be effective for individuals of any age and can help an individual or couple overcome sexual problems and improve sexual feelings and intimacy.

Sex Therapy can help a person or couple overcome sexual problems and improve sexual feelings and intimacy. This type of service is provided by a mental health professional with specific training in issues related to sex and relationships.

At ELNA Sexual Wellness we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treating your sexual concerns.

Our approach

Sexual health goes beyond fixing the “mechanics of sex”. Sexual health also means understanding your body and how it works, and being comfortable with yourself and your sexual desires.

Our approach at ELNA is multi-disciplinary and draws on techniques from the traditional type sex therapy to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), systems oriented couple therapy and medical intervention. We use a five-factor model, which sees sexual issues as a result of the interaction between thoughts, feelings, social/cultural factors, behaviours, and biological factors.

Benefits of sex therapy

Sex therapy can help with a variety of goals, including:

  • Achieving a healthy sexual life
  • Reducing anxiety associated with sexual activity
  • Learning new skills and healthier ways of approaching sex
  • Feeling in control of one’s sexuality and regaining confidence
  • Learning concrete strategies for managing uncomfortable thoughts, emotions, and harmful behaviours that are impacting sex
  • Minimizing pain during intercourse

You deserve to feel confident about intimacy in your relationship.

Sex therapy can be effective for individuals of any age, sex, or sexual orientation.

Issues treated

Sex Therapy can resolve various sexual issues, such as:

  • Concerns about sexual desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Ejaculating early (premature ejaculation)
  • Difficulty with sexual arousal
  • Trouble reaching orgasm (anorgasmia)
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Impulsive sexual behaviour (and ‘sex addiction’)
  • Intimacy issues related to a disability or chronic condition
  • Conflicts with partners about sexual needs, desires, frequency or specific sexual activities

Sex therapy goals and objectives

Using the five-factor model, we help people gain insight into the different factors that contribute to the sexual issue.

The aim is to eliminate old attitudes and habits that get in the way of enjoyable sex, establish new ones that increase sexual arousal, and ultimately help people lead better, healthier, sexual lives.

FAQ

How long does sex therapy take?

Sex therapy is designed to be short-term. A thorough assessment is needed in order to adequately predict how long treatment will take. Generally, it can take anywhere from a few sessions to resolve a problem, to many months of therapy.

Will an appointment be embarrassing?

Our psychologist is fully aware that talking about sex and intimacy with a stranger can be difficult for many people, and is able to help clients feel comfortable very quickly.

Is a doctor’s referral necessary?

No, you can refer yourself. If you have private insurance that covers psychological services, you may wish to obtain a referral. If you do not have a doctor who can refer you, we can arrange for you to meet with one of our urologists who can provide a referral.

How much does it cost?

Each session generally lasts 60 minutes and the standard rate is $120/session.

Do I need to be in a relationship to be in sex therapy?

No. Participating in sex therapy does not require being in a relationship. It only requires a willingness to be open and honest with yourself and your therapist.

If I am in a relationship, should my partner come in too?

This depends. Sometimes issues come up between partners which require both parties be present in order to address them. If your primary concern is a longstanding issue before being involved with your current partner, then it may be appropriate to come in alone. Your therapist may recommend that you both come in for the first session and he or she will recommend the best course of action.
