What is uncontrolled ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man ejaculates with minimal sexual stimulation. Men experiencing this condition ejaculate before or shortly after penetration.

Premature ejaculation is common. 1 in 3 men say they have experienced premature ejaculation at some point in their lives. However, to be medically diagnosed as premature, ejaculation must:

  • Always or almost always occur within 1 minute of sexual penetration
  • Feel impossible to delay (uncontrolled ejaculation)
  • Regularly be a cause of stress, frustration, and avoidance of sexual activity

For some men, a conversation with a doctor might help lessen concerns about premature ejaculation. For example, it might be reassuring to hear that occasional premature ejaculation is normal and that the average time from the beginning of intercourse to ejaculation is about five minutes.

Being ready to talk about premature ejaculation will help you get the treatment you need to put your sex life back on track.

At ELNA, we are dedicated to provide our patients with the latest solutions to premature ejaculation.

When to seek medical advice?

Talk with your doctor if you ejaculate sooner than you wish during most sexual encounters. It’s common for men to feel embarrassed about discussing sexual health concerns, but don’t let that keep you from talking to your doctor. Premature ejaculation is a common and treatable problem.

Symptoms

The main symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay ejaculation for more than one minute after penetration. However, the problem might occur in all sexual situations, even during masturbation.

Premature ejaculation can be classified as:

  • Lifelong (primary). Lifelong premature ejaculation occurs all or nearly all of the time beginning with your first sexual encounters.
  • Acquired (secondary). Acquired premature ejaculation develops after you’ve had previous sexual experiences without ejaculatory problems.

Many men feel that they have symptoms of premature ejaculation, but the symptoms don’t meet the diagnostic criteria for premature ejaculation. Instead these men might have natural variable premature ejaculation, which includes periods of rapid ejaculation as well as periods of normal ejaculation.

Causes of premature ejaculation

It is not yet clear what exactly causes premature ejaculation. However, experts agree that healthy sexual function takes a combination of physical, emotional, and psychological factors working together in synchronized harmony. If any of these factors are “off”, premature ejaculation can occur.

Physical factors
  • Illness (prostrate or urethra inflammation / infection)
  • Other sexual dysfunctions (erectile dysfunction)
  • Hormonal problems (low testosterone)
  • Alcohol abuse
Emotional / Relationship factors
  • Poor communication
  • Relationship conflicts, resentment toward partner
  • Lack of connection with partner
Psychological factors
  • Stress
  • Worry about sexual performance / guilt
  • Past sexual, physical, emotional abuse
  • Negative self-image, embarrassment
  • Cultural/ religious beliefs related to sexuality
  • Mental health conditions (such as depression and anxiety)
